Huge Explosion Reveals Illegal Fireworks Factory in Tennessee

TOM BROKAW (host):

KENLEY JONES (reporting):

The explosion, felt as far as 20 miles away, left scorched earth and blackened wreckage where a metal shed had been. The shed, part of an innocuous looking bait farm, was really an illegal fireworks factory.

The force of the explosion was so great that bodies and parts of bodies, now covered by white sheets, were blown far from the site. Boxes of firecrackers, huge in 100s, found in a nearby trailer were buried in a safety precaution.

Sheriff FRANK PAYNE (Polk County, Tennessee): As far as we knew, the only thing that was here was a bait farm.

Unidentified Man #1: I’ve been wondering all this time how they could employ as many people as what they did just growing worms but…

JONES: People who live near the bait farm said first there was one big explosion…

Unidentified Man #2: Just a big sonic boom and the first went off.

JONES: Then lots of smaller ones.

Unidentified Man #3: They just went on all the time but burnt down.

JONES: Lawmen said they had suspected all the time that illegal fireworks were being made in the area, but had been unable to find the source. Today, they did. Kenley Jones, NBC News, Benton, Tennessee.
